If we define culture as the achievements and institutions with which our life moves forward, away from our primary animal insticts, then the suppression of them is a necessity for cultural advancement.

From antiquity, material life, nature and natural instincts have been personalized to the woman, and the separation of the world into matter and spirit has brought Western patriarchal philosophy and monotheistic religions to the opposing camp.

Female sexuality as the greatest challenge of matter against the spirit  has been kidnapped and imprisoned, as another Persephone, in an underworld, in a cell she can at least "decorate" while patiently waiting for the spring.
